People really do know more than they are willing to share initially for all the reasons you listed. I’ve found people stop saying “I don’t know” when you use the Super Bowl question consistently. The creativity people have when they feel psychologically safe is amazing.

One caveat when using it, it needs to be sincere. People need to know you are genuinely interested in their thoughts. If they feel it is sarcastic or uncaring, it will not work effectively.

When executed appropriately, your team will benefit!

By asking very simple questions, like the ones you have listed gives the opportunity to reflect on past experiences. Another great question is “What has worked in the past with similar situations?”
